Selections from the NSH North Sanpete High School Yearbook 1929

It was interesting to find that the students of North Sanpete High School honored their pioneer heritage with the picture of our pioneer monument on one of the first pages of their yearbook in 1929.  Today, I wonder if the current generation shares that gratitude.  We owe so much to our pioneer forefathers, but how easy it is to forget the struggles the pioneers had  as they settled here.  Too many of our current gneration are only interested in the here and now; others  "Progress" instead of  "Gratitude".  And for some discouragement rather than "Counting our Blessings".

During the next few weeks I will post selections from that same 1929 North Sanpete High School Yearbook.  Hopefully you will find one of your ancestors there.  This yearbook belonged to my sweet mother-in-law, Alice Hafen

For now these happy days will soon be past and leave their pleasant memories alone.

1931 North Sanpete High Yearbook

While cleaning out my computer room closet, I ran onto Alice Hafen's (my mother-in-law) 1931 North Sanpete Year Book. We often get requests from our readers of pictures from these old yearbooks.  I will be posting a number of these pages in the weeks ahead.  Please let me know if you find anything useful in your own family history research.  You can also find more of Alice's treasures at: http://alicehafenphotos.blogspot.com/

My Old Brown Hen

I have an old brown  hen
She is the slyest one
I hear her cackle every day
I know she's laying some.

This goes on for many days.
I can never find the nest.
But I know when she stops cackling
That she has done her best.

Then one morning early
As I go out to weed
What do I spy but my old hen
with twelve baby chicks to feed.

The cats think what a treat
Those little chicks would be
But that old hen just ruffles up and
pecks them fiercefully

Now the cats know she's the boss
and they'll just lay  and wait
and think that when she's not watching
They'll have those little balls of fluff.

But that old hen is wiser than those cats think.
And no matter what happens
That old hen is there
in stalwart and proper fashion.

It is fun to watch that little old hen
As she clucks, calls and scratches for food.
For those little chicks are her pride and joy.
No one must ever intrude.

When the chicks are fed
And its time for them to rest
She proudly puffs her feathers
And they all crowd into her nest.

Now when they are older
Mama hen has a right big fit
As she tries to cover them all
With one great big sit.

Sarah Rasmussen Anderson Remembers Her Mother

Some of you will remember Sarah. I always knew her as a cousin to Grandma Alice Peel Hafen, my mother-in-law. But on a more personaal basis, I remember her as the lovely lady who greeted you with a smile and a hug at the Manti temple. The following poem is written by Sarah in honor of her mother, Jennie Eunice Peel Rasmussen, on her mother's birthday. It contains quite a bit of interesting history as well as her endearment to her mother.
