At the age of 92, Alice Peel Hafen (my sweet mother-in-law), wrote this cookbook as requested by family and friends who had enjoyed the many tasty dishes she had prepared over the years.  With the help of Marc Smith, a nephew she was able to put this collection together.  It not only contains her treasured recipes, but also a wealth of photos and memories she wished to share.  This blog has already shared some of these with you.   Here I will include the Introduction to her book, her personal history and a few of the pictures contained in the first few pages of  her book.

who served in WWII after training in San Luis Obispo.

Valentines From the Past

Oh how I wish I could scan these in 3D.  I love old Valentines

 This little girl with a guitar has movable parts.  If you

pull downward on her extended red bow, she strums

the guitar.

On the back it says "To Alice from Louise".

This 3 D Valentine was given to JoAnn Hafen  (Granger) from

Mary Louise Madsen (Seamons)

It pulls from the bottom revealing a mirror on the inside of the trunk 

that says "My Valentine, I Love You Best"

On each side are honeycomb hearts.

Just lovely.

You can see on this one the white envelope pulls open the message inside "Be My Valentine".

When the envelope pushes back, it reveals a little guy that says " Say You'll be Mine Won't You Please".

You Probably guessed.  The fan moves up and down on this cute little Kitty.

This one is so beautiful.  

It opens up in many layers.

A Selection for North Sanpete High School Yearbook 1929

It was interesting to find that the students of North Sanpete High School honored their pioneer heritage with the picture of our pioneer monument on one of the first pages of their yearbook in 1929.  Today, I wonder if the current generation shares that gratitude.  We owe so much to our pioneer forefathers, but how easy it is to forget the struggles the pioneers had  as they settled here.  Too many of our current gneration are only interested in the here and now; others  "Progress" instead of  "Gratitude".  And for some discouragement rather than "Counting our Blessings". 

During the next few weeks I will post selections from that same 1929 North Sanpete High School Yearbook.  Hopefully you will find one of your ancestors there.  This yearbook belonged to my sweet mother-in-law, Alice Hafen

For now these happy days will soon be past and leave their pleasant memories alone.
